If the nasal passage is significantly affected then it can cause disturbances while sleeping as it results in heaving and snoring. In extreme cases, it may even result in not breathing for a while when the person is asleep. The commonest cause of food allergic reactions is due to consumption of dairy products. Chronic nasal congestion can be treated and even cured by avoiding certain food products like cheese, ice cream, pasteurized milk, cream cheese and other pasteurized dairy products.

Some of the most efficient home remedies to help cure nasal congestion include inhalation of the vapors from heated cardamom seeds. To achieve this, place the seeds in a heated saucepan, and inhale the vapors. This helps in clearing the nasal passage. Another remedy is to take a sterilized container, boil a solution of water and salt in it and then set aside till it is cool. Next using an eyedropper, squeeze a few drops of this solution in each nostril. When you can feel the solution enter into your throat, blow your nose. You may also try placing a pouch that contains crushed and crumbled carom seeds next to your pillow while sleeping. Another useful home remedy for nasal congestion includes doing a nasal rinse that is made up of a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in a cup of warm boiled water. This can be done twice or thrice a day for the best results. Try steam inhalation or have a warm bath just before going to bed, to help clear your nasal passage. Reduction of carbohydrates, sugars, vegetable, fish and whole grains can reduce the possibilities of nasal congestion and asthma occurrences. Drinking hot liquids and also plenty of fruit juices and fluids can help prevent dehydration. Try sleeping with an extra pillow at night as the elevation will reduce nasal congestion. Even putting a little peppermint or eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief and inhaling deeply will help to clear your nasal passages.
