Teenage pregnancy risks – Pregnancy risks for teenage girls

It is true that teen birth rate is falling day by day but unfortunately one million teen pregnancies have been estimated in United States alone. Moreover these pregnancies are unplanned and they only add risk factor to their health.

* One of the biggest risks for teenage mothers is delayed prenatal care and at times, some teen mothers receive no care at all. The teenage pregnancy has adverse effects on teenage mothers as they are unable to complete their high school and are likely to get less married. Not only this, but number of odds are stacked against the newborns of teen parents the minute they are born. As per American Medical Association, babies born to women devoid of prenatal care are 4 times more likely to die before completing their age of 1 year.
* Other teenage pregnancy risks include poor teenager health, slower cognitive development of teens and their worse behavioral pattern. Teen pregnancy badly affects the childhood of teenager plus their future as well. It also robs their children and their children’s children. It has also been seen that more than seven out of ten teenage pregnant girls do not see doctor or. In addition to this, poor eating habits, alcohol and drug intake, smoking increases the health risks in pregnant teenager.
* It is sad to say that the death rate from pregnancy complications is higher among girls who are under 15 years and are pregnant than other pregnant women. Teenage mother is undernourished and suffers from premature or prolonged labor and even with proper nutrition, early prenatal care these problems does not subside and continues to affect the pregnant teenager.
* Not only mothers, but baby is also put at high health risk in case of teenage pregnancy. Low birth weight is the most immediate health problem. Babies born are either too small and may be mentally retarded. They may also have immature organ systems.
